Thanks for your comments. I added the shadow effect on this photo to get rid of some dead air in the composition without resorting to cropping the image. I find it also adds some needed depth to what was otherwise a flat view.
I also wanted to comment that I used to be addicted to perfection, but slowly began to see the beauty in nature's cycles, perhaps in sympathy to my own waning youth which I now see not so much as a loss, but rather as a healthy and natural transition.

Nice! As others have mentioned, the saturated colours pf the flower is especially eye-catching against a smooth gray background. This is a fine example of how the background can make the shot! The composition is great, filling the frame while leaving the iris sufficient breathing room. The light is good too, nice and soft to bring out the great colours. I am not crazy about the shadow but I don't find it distracting.

John, this is wonderful, sharp, brilliant color, very good composition. I'll rock the boat here though and say that I would like it better without the spent flowers on here - that may be my perfectionist gardener side coming out in me today!

The shadow across the leaf adds to the tremendous depth. I also like the shriveled blossoms as being interesting to look at, despite what they represent as 'past glory'.

I think you have done a good job here John. This is an ordinary flower but you have made it look alot better by seperating it from the background. A very good effect for this one.
