About I was about to upload a different photo, when I realized today is my 1 year anniversary at Usefilm, so I thought I should make it good. I think this is one of the better photos I've taken so far this year (however I'd still love it if someone critiqued the heck out of it). I suppose a polarizer would have made the sky a little more spectacular. I don't know why I didn't have it on . . . Oh well - it's a WYSIWYG pic!

thanks for your comment on one of my images...it was my good fortune as it allowed me to discover your impressive collection of work. i hope your schedule allows you to post more frequently.

this one is DynAmite! trmendous compositon...my favorite element is how the lines are all parallel...the sheds, the road, and even the clouds in sky (upper left). the effect is the clouds and road seem to merge at a point on horizon. really cool and why the 1/2 sky, 1/2 wheat works well for my eyes.

A polarising filter would have made the sky jump, the grass glow with a golden hue and looked more like the attachment that Tom submitted, which I think would have more impact and pop.
I love the composition with the road and the barns, but the vertical composition feels too balanced. The sky takes up half the image, and the wheat takes up the other half, splitting the image in two. The barns help to merge the two together, making it work, but I think if you chose either the sky or the wheat to focus on it would have made a more powerful image. Hard to choose in this one though, as the clouds are awesome, and the wheat is so crisp and clear!
It is a great image, and of something that I don't get to see very often now that I've moved from Calgary! Thanks for the memories!

Becky,
we must have been around much the same time here at UF. Think we've improved a bit?!

The composition works really well. In fact its a really nice shot, as you say a polarizer would have defined the sky better, but Tom's version with PS help has done the trink too.
This and your fence are two of my favorites of your work to date.
Nice to see you back after a long break.

Thanks for the critiques! I'm usually not afraid to tweak a photo in PhotoShop but for some reason, I felt compelled to post this photo all nekkid-like. ;) I completely agree that it's okay but not stunning. Tom - thanks for the fix-up and a gargantuan-sized thanks for telling me exactly what you did. It's much more thorough than what I would have done and I really like the final result. :)

Happy 1 year anniversary, Becky. This is a really well-seen and well-composed image. I think you're right that a polarizer would have helped. But a couple slight tweeks in Photoshop really help make it pop, to me. On the version I attached, I deepened the midtones with Levels, sharpened it a little with Unsharp Mask, and added a Gradient with the blend mode to Multiply and the Opacity to 14% to the upper part of the sky. Do you think the changes improve it?

One of the best photos I've seen on Usefilm. Wonderful composition. A tad of work in PS and it's near perfect [some increase in conrast and saturation, bring out the blues a tad]. Wonderful photo--even for a WYSIWYG. :-)

what i think you got here is one great image w/out the spectactular results. The yellowish tint hurts, which i think you already recognize. I'd play w/it in photoshot, it's one great capture.

Beautiful composition! I really like it: nice colours, but most of all I like the lines... give a good perspective to the photo. Maybe (I'm not sure) the horizon it's a bit tilting?... or it's an impression because of those white "houses"? But I like it even so. Good work... nice anniversary ;-)
Regards, Alex
