Hi Peta,
Getting very close to the monitor with powerful reading glasses, I do see the mottling in the original submission. As I think you've figured out, this must have been a PS artifact and not a color calibration problem. The problem is completely corrected in your revised upload.
As for those light Apple screens -- this is not surprising. The default gamma setting on Apple monitors is 1.8 versus 2.2 on Windows monitors. Somewhere in the PN forums I read a rant in which one guy wanted everyone banned from critiquing photos unless they had a cathod ray screen -- no LCD flat screens allowed -- calibrated to certain specific settings, including gamma 2.2. Fortunately, no one took him up on his suggestion. But his basic point, that Browsers and monitors are ALL over the place when it comes to displaying color, is a good one.

Looks great to me. I think you have the concept of the original submission perfectly intact. Interesting that the mottling came from the original image.

Ok, to confirm Stefan's sightings, I now see the areas he saw on the submitted image. I have redone the texturing and now this is approximately what I thought I was seeing when it was submitted. Hopefully to the majority this will not now appear too dark! To me I now see richer browns and golds, which was my intended submission.:) Though subtle is good too, but the areas around his head I don't like at all..that mottling was from the original lighting not the texturing I discovered.

Thank you Amancio.
Stefan...lol...we have the same eyes I discovered, same colour, but you have that unique little 'condition'. Last night a friend and I in chat went through calibration. I discovered my black and 90% were exactly the same...black. My setting was on 4 it is now on 29...that appeared right. When I get a moment I'm going to attach this image as I now see it after I correct it. Right now I'm seeing what your 3 eyedballs are seeing.;) So big thanks for pointing the problem out! My monitor is quite different in appearance this morning!

Hi again Peta - monitor settings are probably the culprit here. I abused your photo further and brought the white point way down and messed with the midtone compression in PSP8 just to exaggerate what I see. It is definitely coming from the texture since it is not at all present in the photo of Kevin. That was really nice to see btw, I love the transformation of this photo, and the idea to present it the way you did.

Thanks dear Marilia. :) Hugs!
I was coming back here to comment about monitor calibration! I don't know how to do it! But that might be the problem with how this is perceived. I have had 2 other friends email me and they apparently are seeing this like Stefan is. So whose monitor is off I don't know! But this is one thing in my life I'm perfectionistic about and that is the final image I submit. So I'm a tad frustrated! I may post from now on a little darker image than I wish. Hope that works for most viewing. :)
This is such a wonderful site for getting friendly advice, I just wish I was more confidant and learned in the technical aspects to return the advice to others.

I am going with everybody, Peta. We've been elected our Rembrandt! There is a quality to this portrait that is hard to define. Textures, maybe? Like layers of tint carefully applyed by a master painter. This is so exceptional that goes right into my favorites. I have to look at it, many, many times, my friend. I must. Hugs, Marília

Hi Jeff, thank you.:)
Hi Stefan, my two daughters and I don't see what you are seeing. Sorry. :) I don't pretend this portrait is perfection, but I guess I need to see it on your monitor. Here is the attached raw original....I did add texturing to this from photographed handmade paper...I think it was. Maybe that is the splotches you see. Thanks for your time and consideration on this, appreciate your input.

Peta - I outlined the two areas I am talking about. I wonder about the area going down and right from his face (mouth to glasses), before you hit black there are some grayish splotches (if that is a word)... That, or I'm officially crazy.

Stefan, not sure what you are seeing, a halo? Hmmm, well Kevin thought he looked angelic, maybe it is his aura. Maybe our monitors are seeing different things? I amazed at the difference of some. I saw my works on 2 macs recently and they were so LIGHT! Horrors!

I certainly has a timeless feel to it - love the lush color in the top/jacket. I do wonder what is going on with the halo (looks like glare) around his face, to me it just distracts from this photo.

Peta - this is a wonderful character study. Your work is simply professional. There is no other word for it. Great exposure, great pose and expression, great lighting and wonderfully composed. Brilliant work. I cannot believe how you undermine your talent. You go girl - you should be doing this for money. You have wonderful talent and a natural eye. The fact that you dont have much technical experience just shows your true talent that much more.
This goes into my favorites. Excellent work.

Peta; this is truly outstanding-- the soft lighting, warm colors, and composition are perfect. I can't see a thing in this photo that could use improvement (and I can be pretty opinionated). You have a wonderful natural talent for this, but I also think you work hard at it too-- a dynamite combination for success. Congratulations. Craig

If it weren't for the modern looking eyeglasses, this could pass for a painting from the 16th century or so (although I don't know if boys wore earrings in that day and age :)) The rich wood table, the slightly mottled wall behind his head, the clothing, all that looks so "authentic". Were you trying for an older painting look? I love the way you use your photographed textures.
~Ursula
PS - yesterday my son and I went to a showing of the works of Parmigianino, and this picture reminds me a bit of one of the paintings we saw yesterday, a painting of a man with a book, standing behind a chair or some other arched object. The colours and texture are similar, not quite, but similar. Although the man in that picture had these very long, curved fingers; a lot of Parmigianino's works have fingers like that.
