About
This is one of my favorite parts of inner city Melbourne - Collingwood's Johnston Street. In 1991 I squatted more or less across the street from these old shop fronts, their doors firmly closed, padlocked and a couple of inches of street grit banked up. This picture was taken in early 1997 and that same day a friend and I took a look inside them since somebody had broken off the huge rusted padlocks. They hadn't been occupied since the early 1960s and had been used for storage of fabric. The roof had long been leaking and everything was in an advanced state of decay, even the floors were rotten through. The blue car appeared that day and added to the mood of this mean street.
Pure poetry your eye is strongly focussed on pathos and I think this is where your strength lies. Excellent strong yet with a sense of quiet understatement slowly resolving imagery and as I said with "two Vans" a deft undercurrent of narrative..good solid art is bound so often firnly to such things thanks.. keep it real
