About This traditional symbol better known as the Swastika was perhaps the most badly abused symbol of all time. It was of course adopted by the Nazis and is still used as an anti-Semetic symbol. However the traditional emblematic symbol is of peace and harmony and is in the reverse motion to the Nazi symbol although it can appear in the same motion. This one has been made of paper at the recent Buddha's Birthday celebrations in Korea.

Aparently, the first time a Swastika showed up was actually in a mosque in Iran, former Persia (Yazd) People who visit that mosque are lead to believe it was there that the Nazis (to be) learned about that sign.

Without prejudice to the association with the sigh (either way), I don't find this one very attractive as a photo. It could use some stronger contrast / lighting, and I find the green in the top right corner a tad distracting.

Cheers,

Hugo

a true test of visual psychology. it is hard to see past what we have been conditioned to see. leave it to the nazi to reverse a long standing symbol of peace and create a symbol of war and hatred which becomes more recognized and reveared then its original meaning of peace. :(

That is a bad symbol. Sadly, I saw it.

I had read about the american indians having a symbol like this many years ago, so I wasnt put off by the image and I presumed from your location it was exactly what it should be, a symbol of peace.
No matter what the original history tho, the true meaning has been destroyed forever!
Impossible to look at without those terrible thoughts :(
I did a quick google on the swastika/peace symbol and found some neo-nazi sites that are denying that it was ever a symbol of peace!
I could go on a different tangent, I keep thinking the flowers look like little sugary meringues :) A nice happy thought.
Cheers

Thank you for explaining this. I'd also like to note the vibrant colors of the image.

Very nice! I thought it's the Nazi symbol as well.

Very interesting. I used to see this in Pusan and Seoul and it really threw me for a loop until I learned what it meant. I wonder how many viewers will be so turned off by the thumbnail that they won't even take a look. You have captured controversy here, sir. Well done.

Nice shot, Sean. The symbol, although badly used and seen in the western world, is very beautiful. A pity the relation it with to the nazism. Cheers.
