In the 12th century King David the Builder was responsible for unifying Georgia, which lead to the so called period of the Georgian Renascence. In Tbilisi recently this piece of sculpture was placed infront of the former Hotel Iveria, it since the early 1990s a hostel for the Abkhazian refugees. More recently the building was bought and the refugees will be evicted later this year.
To answer your question Ed this statue was installed only a few years ago infront of the formerly presigious hotel. Abakasian refugees have occupied the building since about 1995. The statue was to be places at another location in the city. I can only guess that the decision maker who had it placed here was perhaps making some statement about Georgia of recent years. I met some Abkasian refugees in another city. They can still not go home, it's a hopless situation.
Like it, again, a lot! Excellent contrast between the king & his people. I wonder how recently the statue was placed there, was it before the building lost its glamour or after?
