Thanks Andree,
Photoshop, a contrast filter and a tripod helped.
When I go back I am going to try to take multiple photographs, with a tripod, and with different exposure settings and then layer them in Photoshop. I hear that this works nicely and The Cloisters, with its contrast extremes is a good place to try.
