About Anyone with clear skies on the evening of Saturday, September 7, 2002 most likely witnessed the spectacular aurora that occured. Peaking between 9-9:50pm EDT (but remaining active all night), the aurora was seen as far south as Georgia.

I was lucky enough to be located under the very dark skies of the Reserve Faunique La Verendrye in Quebec (located north-west of Maniwaki) on that special night. These auroras were the best and most vivid that I've ever seen. The rapidly moving curtains and bright colors 'wowed' the 30 or so amateur astronomers who were gathered together under the night skies.

Here, an observer briefly ignores the aurora to gaze through a truss-tube Newtonian reflector.I used a Minolta SRT-101 camera, a 58mm lens at f2.8 and Fuji Superia 800 film with an exposure time of 12 seconds.

This photo appeared in the Nov/Dec 2002 issue of SkyNews (the Canadian magazine of astronomy).

Pierre,

One night I was testing a few lenses with a roll of Superia 800 on my roof in NYC, and when I got prints back, the results were too green for my liking, so I discounted using Superia as an astro film. Later, after doing some checking, it turns out that there was auroral activity that night, visible deep into the South, and I actually caught that on film. I now mostly shoot medium format on slide film (Kodak E200 & Fuji Provia 400), though I may try to get back to some prime focus work soon.

Thanks Taras, I appreciate you writing. That's too bad to hear your photos of that night didn't pan out. Sure was an amazing display... best I've seen!

Maybe get some more surprises even with solar minima approaching.

Pierre,

Nice composition. If I recall correctly, that night the film in my SRT101 did not wind, and I lost a whole nights work of guided astrophotos. I do remember seeing the curtains to the northwest. I wasn't too upset, as I was using an ST4 autoguider that night, and enjoying the display.

Hey Shane,

Thanks! The person was actually pure luck. When I started the exposure, it was only on the scope. Then by chance, someone happened walk to the eyepiece and stayed there until the exposure was done )

Hey Pierre,

Great capture of this auroral display! I really like the way you used the person and the telescope for the foreground point of reference. It makes for a classic and unique shot! Well done Pierre !
