Really good, nature's symmetry all prickly and forbidding in this case. The thistle is an incredible plant -- they grow in abundance in the patch of forest behind my house. I think this picture of yours might prompt me to look at them more closely... Rgds, Svend

Great DoF. Lovely tones. I like that the main object is off center and we can see another thistle behind. Thanks for your comment on my cubist rock. -- Naomi

Well, it took me a couple of days to get to this, but what a treat! This is outstanding, Stefan! The black and white treatment you gave this makes it look radiant - as though it were glowing from it's own inner source! Really excellent tonality throughout!

These flowers present themselves like a couple of thugs. The opne at the back sneering and smiling cruelly.

Thanks Kim - I hadn't thought about how the b/w conversion emphasizes the pricklyness of this thing...

Everything about this image says "OUCH!" I love how the prickles are echoed in the thistle in the bg as well and that the DOF allows us to see each prick well, but still is blurred enough to make the one stand out. Well seen!

Hi Barry - yes the IR feel occurred to me as well. The b/w conversion was with the desaturation after hue layer method, but I was curious too and it seems that the green channel has the strongest brightening of the main flower.

Speaking of infra-red, this has a very infra-red feel to it. I assume that you enhanced the red channel using channel mixer in Photoshop?

Larger apertures would have been possible (and a good idea) in this case. In macro shots with this camera that is almost never a concern so I didn't even consider it an issue at the time. The flower on the left was at least at twice the distance of the main subject - I was actually more concerend with getting everything in the main flower as sharp as possible.

Hi Stefan,
a near microscopic look here... very cool stuff. a lower DOF would help but is not so easy with the G3 (I guess) =)
good one!
