Thanks for the USM tip, Audrey.
I try to view my photos on as many computers as possible (which usually means just my home & work comps) . . . I viewed this photo on a relative's computer the other day and EGAD! I can totally see what you're talking about now. This "halo" everyone is mentioning? Totally invisible on my computer (and I swear I have the monitor calibrated correctly . . . but then again, maybe not).
I wonder how many more of my photos look as horrendous to others? Gadzooks! The thought!

..well.. hello becky, for my fortune i have found your big photo, were much time that I did not have your news and today I have found yours link in a comment to a friend. a photo much minimalistic, where the look is turned to the infinite, to the future... maybe one unsharp mask obvious, but balanced..

Becky, how about trying the USM settings at 0(really low) for threshold and adjust with radius only? I've been told off so many times in the days goneby, that I now find this method and selecting areas for USM works best for me.

I am not convinced that the halo around the man comes from the USM. Couldn't part of it be the backlight on him?

The fringing from sharpeing is a little distracting (especially around the silhouetted man), but it is auch an evocative image that it's hardly an issue, and easy to fix anyway. Christian made a great point about the fact that the man is looking to the left - looking 'back' and reflecting... I also like how everything fades to black on the left side, disappearing into memory. Nice job!

It think it is an incredible shot - there is something very compelling in the interplay between the man and the landscape, almost as if this moment is a display put on just for him. It works really well in black and white and even with perfect evening colors I think I might prefer this version.

It's been awhile since I worked with this photo, but I'm pretty sure I didn't take the sharpen tool to it. However, I would have used Unsharp Mask, which I normally apply to my photos. The settings usually lie at 30% with negligible radius and threshold settings. I didn't realize that would make a huge difference, but I guess it does. Hm.

Hi Becky, Very good scene,well composed, very quiet and a little sad from its emotional content to me. From a technical point the oversharpening edges are quite disturbing. Regards Jörg

Hi Becky, this image is a perfectly lovely silhouetted image. The two 'hills' across from each other balances the composition, the person give the focus point. The milky smooth sky pulls it together - teffific. A small fix may be going easy on the sharpen tool, a bit of telll tale around the person. Otherwise a lovely quiet/tranquil picture for keeps.

Whatever the metering method, treating this with a stong silhoouette was the way to go. The composition is well balanced, and I like that the man is looking into the frame, toward the left, which our mind will interpret as looking back - a way to evoke nostalgia. Since the exposure is based on the sky, it has not blown out and the fine deails of its clouds are in echoe with the calm waters - a feeling of serenity emerges.

A wonderful photo. The silhouette can often tell many things about someone by what it conceals. Because the object of the photo is left to the unseen, all we have left with which to view the photos are the memories. Great courage to share something so tender and meaningful with us. Way to go!!
