Very good picture and explanation, Len! I love the forest setting, and the back building looks architecturally impressive. I also like the older spirit house, it blends better with the surrounding nature (maybe because its colors have faded) - the new one is colorful, but in a more synthetic kind of way. I guess in duetime, it'll get its own patina. Regards, Ina

All kinds of spirits live in spirit houses. I imagine this is a newer one than the spirit house behind it, but I could be wrong.

Joe Cummings has a neat little introduction to spirit houses and guardian spirits in 'Thailand: a Lonely Planet travel survival kit'. In that he names a number of guardian spirits, including Phra That Tara (whose influence is over temples, shrines and monasteries) and Phra Chaimongkhon (houses).

He writes: 'How do you ensure that the spirits take up residence in your spirit house..? Mainly by making the spirit house a more auspicious place to live in than the main building, through daily offerings of food, flowers, candles and incense...'

Thanks for taking an interest, Cristina. Look forward to seeing more postings from you soon.

Best wishes, Len
