Great shot. I really like the way he is poking his head in from the diagonal corner to show his marvelous wide eyed expression against the contrasted blur of activity and motion in the background. MArvelous.
Thanks for your recent comment.

Wow, this is beautiful, Erik! What a great-looking kid, and what an expression. You caught it just perfectly, composed it perfectly - even the shallow DOF and the motion of the kids in the background adds to the impact of this image.

Erik,

What a great portrait! Absolutely full of life and excitement.
I love the motion blur background with this head shot.
This has got to have some kind of recognition.

Fun photo, Erik. The tilted perspective makes the photo even more interesting. The blurred kids in the background provide a nice colorful backdrop. I love the expression on your subject's face. Makes me wonder what prompted his look of fearful surprise -- is the coach yelling at him, is he intimidated to have his picture taken, or did you take him by total surprise? Nice shot.

Good thoughts, Erik. What's key (in your camp kid photos) is your affection for the subjects, and I think this photo works really well in that context. And it's impressive for the layering, too. Thanks for responding.

gayle,
thanks for the comments. shooting camp was great. i did one in the berkshires and then another right after outside of LA. it's all kind of a blur (no pun intended). it was actually quite intense. the camp was spiritual in nature and involved each of the kids(at risk families from the Bronx) overcoming their greatest fears and challenges. there were plenty of moments for humor and fun also. that's why this one is so important to me.
cheers,
erik

ned,

thanks so much for these thoughts. i'm gald you brought up the idea of negative stereotype. the thought did cross my mind, but then again out of the all of the images captured that day, this one really jumps out at me. it must be for a reason. i too hope it's for the right reasons. i certainly am not trying to make fun of the boy, but rather catch him making one of his great faces (he does have several other ones). Good point!
the original image had a slightly blurred backgound, which i enhanced (hopefully not too far) by painting in a layer of motion blur behind the subject. i did this in photoshop.
hope this helps.

cheers,

erik

Hi Erik -- the difference between foreground and background is amazing (would love to know how you did it!) Very fine quality, but I have to say (maybe the only one?) that the wide eyes are not flattering to him and it seems to verge on an old (and terrible) stereotype. I know you're capturing the boy as he was, and that's photographic truth, but it still got my attention for the wrong reason... So different from the boy flying through the air over the water. Anyway, just a thought. -- Ned

Nice work. The angled composition and the blurred background, together with his expression make this a winner.
