Eb - Nice composition. Contrast with the browns in the rotten log is perfect. You should try an even closer macro of the moss "leaves".

Eb - Interesting set-up. The subtle green (lichens?) in the bark adds color to the neutral surface. The twin "peaks" in the bark frame the shot. Nice work.

I don't consider your lens options crappy. I have been toying with the idea of building a simple blind to get me closer to the wildlife without having to us my TC's. I also have looked at an aluminum framed "realtree camo" portable blind.
Good luck.

Gary - I almost bought the 300-800 about a year ago. Instead I bought a Nikon 400mm f2.8. In my "research", the only negative on the 300-800 was its' weight. Image quality was very good, AF speed was OK and lens construction is reported to be top notch. If you get one, you will need a very sturdy tripod and a gimbal head so you can easily swivel the whole assembly. You can look at reviews on this lens at fredmiranda.com.

Eb - Nice sharpness, reflections and composition. Just an idea - if you open up the aperture to say f5.6 and focus on the duck, the reflections will blend together nicely (just from my duck picture experience). It makes a muddled background.

Eb - I like the B & W rendition of this. The tall grass provide a nice foreground of the picture. When is the D300 arriving? I have decided to start saving for the D3....will take quite some time, but based on its capabilities in high ISO's...I am really interested to have it for night sports.
