About During spring wolfeels come shallow to feast on the multitude of molluscs thriving in the currents running between the islets of Øygarden county, Norway. The fish was lying half out of a cave when I came upon him. He retreated into his den to re-emerge after 10 minutes. I managed two frames before he retreated back into the den. A further 10 minutes of vaiting did'nt persuade him out, and I had to return to shallower depths.

This is an incridiblly beautiful underwater shot... can name it very well a great portrait.. never seen any one close to that eel species in the Red see... but it is an excellent shot, excellent details, and colors... composition and cropping... color and contrast.. well actually every thing.

Amaizing work Espen... just found your portfolio... going to dive in now, and enjoy the rest of your (very little :( postings )

Espen, Wow, what a photo. I like the rich colors and the unbelieveable texture and lines on the eel. Three strobes? Did you have them mounted on a bracket for diving? How were they positioned? The lighting is perfect!

Thanks again for all the nice comments. I have lots of theese in my backyard. They can grow to about 1,5m in length and attain a weight og 20kg. Typical size is around 1m, 10kg. The one on the picture is a juvenile. You can tell by the size of the eye relative to the general head size.

Thanks again!
Espen ;-)

One question I do have is how large is a wolfeel?

I keep coming back to this image and I don't think anything could have made this more spectacular.

Quite sensational, I will be surprised if this doesn't warrant a ribbon! It makes under water photography look so easy, you have done a fine job! Show us more of your images, please.

Takk George, Thanks to all that commented.

It would be possible to stop down even further with that lens (at that distance), but it's always a compromise between sharpness and depth of field. As to the light 1x100ws and 2x50ws strobes. Distance from subject to camera is 30cm. Underwater photographers depend allmost entirely on flash for macro and close up work. However there are exceptions, I'll post some later.

Thanks again to all that commented,

Skål (cheers, in the drinking scense of things)
Espen :-)

This looks very different than the wolf eels I have seen on the West coast of North America. Great close-up.
