Alberto,

Very well executed. The exposure is just right to show the color of the eclipse, and the focus is sharp. Excellent work.

Good work. With a longer lens you could get more detail.

Reza,

A longer lens could give you more detail.

Also, a longer exposure on the crescent phase can yeild the dark side of the moon illuminated by light reflecting off of the earth (earthshine) http://www.usefilm.com/image/134027.html http://www.usefilm.com/image/106679.html

Joann,

What Gerhard was trying to explain is that a shorter exposure on the moon will give you detail on its face. You will be able to tell the difference between the maria and the highlands even at this focal length, but a longer lens always helps.

Robert,

I think you should have been able to get better focus, but I do not know the quality of the DiMAGE Z1's optical zoom.

Here are links to two of my images from November's lunar eclipse: http://www.usefilm.com/image/243928.html , http://www.usefilm.com/image/243288.html

It looks like you got some image shake in this exposure.

Robert,

I tend to prefer shorter exposures on the partial phases, but this captures the colors...

Adrian,

The focus is a bit soft, but the exposure is good. You have nice contrast for a near full moon. Try shooting the moon when it is near one of the quarter phases. There will be more shadow detail to aid your focusing. Auto focus doesn't work too well on astronomical subjects.

Ann,

I was afraid that that was the moon, in which case your image is quite out of focus. Either that, or atmospheric blurring caused your image of the planet to bloat. The size of the moon reflection seems to indicate focus, though. Mars at its largest was about 25 to 27 seconds of arc in diameter. The moon is about 30 minutes of arc in diameter, so the moon should appear about 60x the diameter of Mars.

If you use autofocus at astronomical targets, you will usually get out of focus images.

To avoid the internal reflections, you need to put the bright object into the center of image. This is a little unimaginative as far as composition goes, but it will minimize the flaring from internal reflections. I got one of those reflections in this shot: http://homepage.mac.com/tarashnat/astrophoto/0035-16.html
of the Moon and Jupiter.

Blaine,

The fingerprints on the scan are distracting. This image is a bit overexposed, but that could be the print/scan. When I shoot the moon, especially through a telescope, I always bracket my exposures.

Anne,

The blue is an internal (lens/camera) reflection of the bright light source. By the way, what is that bright light? Is that Mars, or is the smaller orange disc Mars? Which night was this taken?

Here is one of my Mars images from last year: http://www.usefilm.com/image/190750.html . There are more on my web site at http://homepage.mac.com/tarashnat/astrophoto/ccdplanet.html . These are taken with a web cam through telescopes.

Stace,

Thanks...

For all astronomical bodies, rising is when they ascend above the horizon, and setting is when they descend below the horizon. Sunrise varies by only a small amount each day. The moon rises approximately an hour later each day give or take depending on location on earth and the season, which determine the angle of the moon's orbit to the horizon. The stars rise 4 minutes earlier each day, which is why we see different constellations at different seasons.

Stace,

This is a few hours before moon set. Moonrise was at about 7:40 AM. Moonset near 11:00 PM.

The border is discracting fron the otherwise dreamy soft focus of the image. Nice shade of blue.

Here is my take on the conjunction of the crescent moon and Venus from January: http://www.usefilm.com/image/307958.html
