(appologies to those who have seen my previous shot and already read most of the following) I'm working on a project at the moment that needs a fair amount of B&W portraiture, which is really not my field, so I thought I'd get some practice in. This is my mother, trying to look like she isn't posing! I wanted to get a good 'book jacket shot' without it looking too contrived so this is one of about six shots taken in fairly rapid succession whilst chatting. I did do a little bit of touching up in PS, mainly a touch of burn on the right cheek and dodged the eyes. I know this is not the most innovative shot but I really would appreciate some feedback because I start shooting next week (gulp!).
To me, this is a better portrait than the one of your father. The crop there was just a bit too tight for my taste. I was thinking about the reflections in the glasses - fortunately they don't obstruct the eyes, so all is not lost for this portrait, but as has already been discussed, it would be better if they weren't there. I generally like the tones but some burning would be in order of the highlights on her right hand, near the bottom edge.
I agree about the reflection in the glasses, it was an impromptu shoot and I didn't have a polariser and wanted to capture a moment rather than start moving reflective objects, etc. I'd normally plan this a bit better! Thanks for your feedback
