I would have thought one of his senior house servants, but I was informed that he was indeed the Maharaja of Varanasi. The Maharaja's are India's decendants of a Royal class and were set up by the British. They still exist in a number of Indian states and regions. About five years after taking this picture, it was taken in 1993, I saw a TV programme on Varanasi and they interviewed the then Maharaja of Varanasi who was about one generation younger. He must have since succeeded his father during those years between making this picture.
Interesting picture. Composition a little to centred. Try cropped to one side. Could possibly try improving contrast to bring him out of the picture. Additional text adds extra context.
