About I was looking for a nice stage for the skyscape, and tried this farm track. Handheld, polarizer, 2 stop soft grad ND. To achieve best definition for the grass, I converted to B&W with a green filter high contrast setting, and made two other TIFFs with tones adjusted for the sky and the lane (those with red filter, high contrast). At last, cropping, composite with PS, sharpening after resize.

A fabulous composition! Also, the B&W tones are masterful for both the grass, the track, and the sky. Th depth and perspective are very grabbing. I love this.

I will say that the grass and track dominate the sky a little more than I would like, partly because they seem much sharper than the sky. The sky is very nice and adds a sense of depth and scale, but again the clouds seem a little bit dull to my eye, next to the comparitive sharpness of the ground. But in all this is a very minor criticism of a truely arresting landscape!

Wow, Antonia, thanks for your wonderful comment. "2 stop soft ND" means a graduated neutral dark filter with soft transition and up to 2 stops filtering @ the darkest part. I try a combined approach @ the moment, with filters and PS to get the most out of the digital.

Cheers - have a nice weekend

Carsten

This happens to be one of my favorite things in life -- a lone dirt road surrounded by wide open country and a beautiful cloudy sky. You have no idea how many times I've tried to capture them this way to no avail, because of the exposure issues you have resolved in PS, and because there was some odd building, tree or other object in the way (you resolved via a successful search). What fun it will be to dig out those old images and, when I get my scanner fixed, to apply what you have taught. I would love to have this hung -- even a little one, somewhere where I can lose myself in peaceful thought. Now I understand everything except the part: "2 stop soft grad ND," so could I have a translation for that? Wonderful work Carsten. My favorite rung in this is the way the flower tops rise so sharp just a smidge above the horizon. Interesting aspect is that this doesn't hold to the rule of 3rds...and yet it works. Antonia

Great composition and very powerful sky and tones Carsten, I do agree with the comments about the sharpenning especially on the horizon. But regardless this is a very beautiful work!

Eigentlich eine einfache Szene, die aber spannend und spektakulär wirkt durch den Kontrast zwischen Himmel und Erde.Dir Tönung gefällt mir besonders.
Viele Grüße,Ursula

A lot of work, Carsten. It all comes together beautifully. Very nice tones and excellent details and textures on the grass and the track.

The sky is very beautiful with some very nice and well-defined clouds.

Yusuf, sharpness is selectively emphasized with layer mask technique, deliberately. I did not want to destroy the soft tones of the clouds, and I found the sharp / soft contrast somehow interesting, of course a matter of taste. Thanks for stopping by.

The tonality is very beautiful. According to me the composition could be better when the photo was cropped just beneath the highest cloud.
Excellent work.

A lot of work, but certainly worth the outcome. The dark sky is almost an IR effect from the red filter, but it is nice to see the vegatation preserved in a nice dark tone.

Even though the sky and ground are placed right on the middle of the horizonal, the composition seems to work for me because of the strong diagonal from the road.

This one certainly pops out and it looks like a sharpening filter - good use for posting.

beautiful and dramatic. The foreground is interesting but I think I would give it a little less space in the composition. Just an idea.

I love the quiet composition with the dirt road which along with the grass look so realistic, almost 3 dimensional.

Compared to the sky, the grass is too sharp, I think. Your method for this photo is impressive.

It's a little bit too sharp at first sight but the sky and the framing is wonderful.
I also liked the sepia because it's applied really well on this.
Congrats!
